Beginning of Semester = Horror Week (08/19 – 08/25/19)

On Monday, after feeling uneasy about a job interview I went on, I decided to watch Tusk (2014), a movie I’ve been wanting to watch based on premise alone. All I can really say, is “what the ever-loving fuck, Kevin Smith”. It’s really original, and I appreciate that.

I then watched more of Episodes (2018), because again, I’m a nerd. Big shocker there.

First day of school (and work after). Chilled with some more Bojack.

Wednesday, watched a couple episodes of Yamishibai (2013-) before going and seeing Good Boys (2019)!

Then, a full day of school/actually being a person and going out once in a while.

Friday = movie day! Watched My Friend Dahmer (2017), finally, after reading the graphic novel it’s based on last year. Followed that up with It Comes at Night (2017), yet another A24 movie. Send help.

Tusk

Rating: 3 out of 5.

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, KEVIN SMITH.

This is one of those films I’d been meaning to watch for a while, and I thought I knew what I was in for. Boy, did I underestimate this.

Good Boys

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Really. Fucking. Funny.

Painfully simple plot, but so is 6th grade, so that feels right.

I think all the people who didn’t like this movie forget what it’s like to be 12, because yes, 12 year olds swear, Martha.

My Friend Dahmer

Rating: 3 out of 5.

After reading the book this is based on, written by one of Dahmer’s friends in high school, I found this to be a really honest portrayal of pre-serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Not trying to say we should feel sorry for the guy, but he did deal with a lot of shit growing up- an unstable home life, bullying, his burgeoning homosexuality and his resulting internalized hatred of himself, and his “dark thoughts” on top of that.

Should he have killed? Obviously no. Did he deserve a better support system pre-killing? Clearly, yes.

It Comes at Night

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Probably the saddest horror movie I’ve ever seen- deals a lot with paranoia and the overall question of “who can you trust” which is a prevailing theme of zombie-style apocalypse films.
