Something Feels Fishy… (10/28 – 11/03/19)

I took a bit of a Catfish break this week (meaning: I only finished one season). Nev’s co-host Max was gone for most of this season because I guess he was filming a movie with Zac Efron? I’d never heard of the movie, which is kind of unfortunate, since this season was shot in 2015.
This was also the only season I finished this week. I was feeling extra scattered this time around, and really struggled for focus on anything for more than 10 minutes (great for YouTube videos, not so much for television episodes of films). I watched the first two episodes of the new season of Bojack Horseman and couldn’t get into it, and watched the first three episodes of Queer Eye: We’re in Japan! which I’m sincerely enjoying (I always love watching new Queer Eye episodes) but haven’t been able to truly binge because I need a lot more focus to watch something with subtitles than I have to spare at the moment.

Shoutout to the lesbians who conned MTV for a free plane ticket to meet each other!! (S4 Ep 8)

Besides the Barbie movies (I’ll get into those in a bit) the only movie I watched this week was, at least, a classic. Thankfully, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) is a really tight movie- every scene feels necessary and important and doesn’t waste the audiences time, which I appreciated. It also helps add to the feeling of impending doom and paranoia; there’s no time to think, breathe, or sleep (*ba dum tss*). Clocking in at a little over an hour (including the shoe-horned ending that the studio forced into the script, it manages to ask the classic “what makes us human?” sci-fi question, while also being either anti-mccarthyism or anti-communist, depending on your own political leanings.

Friday night, I crashed a Barbie marathon. It was with Inigo, Tyler, and Audrey, where we watched Barbie in a Mermaid’s Tale (2010) (I only caught the last 10~ minutes of it, but still remembered it from my childhood) and Barbie in a Mermaid’s Tale 2 (2012), which I had never seen before. I honestly enjoyed both a lot more than I thought I would, and I can’t exactly explain why.

I’m thinking of doing a themed week for next week, so hopefully me typing this out here will get me to stick to it. Find out if I actually manage to do it next week!

Unofficial Ratings

Catfish: Season 4

Rating: 3 out of 5.

I found out that in season 7 Max leaves the show permanently, and now I kind of want to stretch out the last couple seasons as long as possible before that happens.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Rating: 4 out of 5.

They see you when you’re sleeping, they know when you’re awake, they’ll know right when you fall asleep, so that they can take your place! You better watch out, you better go hide, you better not sleep, I’m telling you why. Pod people are coming to town!

Barbie in a Mermaid’s Tale

Rating: 3 out of 5.

The best part of this was hearing Inigo talk about how this movie fit into the Barbie Universe/lore.

Barbie in a Mermaid’s Tale 2

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I know I said this in my Letterboxd review too, but we really are just gonna gloss over the child slaves in this movie, huh?

As Always, Please Check Out My Letterboxd! Happy Watching!
