Welcome to Hell Week, Pledge (09/09 – 09/18)

NOTE: Just so you can't be mad at me for giving something away, this is going to be a very spoiler-heavy post, because 1. these movies are too wild to tip toe around and 2. I have a pretty solid feeling that none of you will ever watch any of these.

In case the three of you reading this weren’t aware- I’m in a sorority. Well, technically it’s a fraternity. And technically, I’m in two (KAΘ & AΣN represent!). So when my fantastic friend Fran recommended I do a week themed around Greek Life Horror (a truly bizarre subgenre), I really couldn’t say no.

So here we are.

Finding movie titles was easy. Finding where to watch them was hard impossible. The internet can only give so much.

After completely submerging myself in the It audiobook in honor of part 2 being in theaters, I was pretty grateful to be taking part in something that didn’t constantly sexualize an 11 year-old girl… instead, I watched something that sexualized an 18 year-old woman. Women, really. Since no one actually understands sororities, I have a sinking feeling I’m in for a lot of that this week.

Anyway, Wednesday I watched The Initiation (1984) about a pledge who has to break in to her father’s department store as part of a hazing ritual . Except she may have also stabbed a guy when she was nine, and set him on fire. #beenthere. There’s this subplot about her having amnesia and not knowing she charbroiled a dude in the 4th grade but having nightmares about it, and he ends up (unbeknownst to her) being real, and alive, and in a mental institution, from which he escapes, and starts a-murdering. She also has a twin? A murderous twin? Unclear. That never really got discussed since it was a twist right at the end. Honestly, thank God for amnesia; if she remembered all this stuff we wouldn’t really have had a plot.

Wednesday was also the day that I finished the It audiobook, which also made this a very It-week. On Thursday I watched It (2017) before bed, concerning myself with the fact that I was able to easily fall asleep afterwards, so I could go to the theaters and watch It: Chapter 2 (2019) on Friday. I love Bill Hader with all my heart and soul, and this movie only intensified that love.

A coworker moved across the country without telling anyone, leaving my work scrambling to cover shifts. A burden which ended falling largely onto me. Because of that, I wasn’t able to watch anything over the weekend like I had been planning. But FRET NOT! I’m extending Greek Week into next week so get excited for part 2!

Unofficial Ratings

The Initiation

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Word for the wise to losers guys who decide to make a movie about sorority girls: we don’t hang out completely naked in the bathroom together. Sorry to burst your bubble.

It

Rating: 3 out of 5.

It’s so hard for me to be critical of this movie because anything is better than that fucking pedophiliac, racist, homophobic, sexist book that I now judge every customer who purchases it from work.

It: Chapter 2

Rating: 3 out of 5.

To be completely honest, the least interesting part of this movie was the climax.
