Hiding Behind a Mask (01/06 – 01/12/20)

I crashed hard after that countdown. Plus, with my internship (and therapy) starting full force this week, I didn’t want to look at a screen outside the office, let alone pay attention to it. The fact that I was able to finish more than one thing is honestly astonishing to me.

Monday, I ended up staying up way too late and binging Sex, Explained. I really had no choice once I learned it was narrated by the one and only Janelle Monáe. That being said, I would’ve LOVED some kind of warning before being slammed with real footage of a c-section. I was preparing myself to be horrified for the “childbirth” episode, so I was completely clotheslined when it popped up in the “fertility” episode.

Speaking of that “childbirth” episode, I’m not officially convinced that giving birth is just code for sanctioned torture. Episiotomies? Injections to the spine? Twilight sleep? This episode is just one major reminder that the medical world (and our evolved species) fucking hate women/people with vaginas. If I ever had an inkling of wanting kids before, believe me when I tell you that urge is GONE AND WILL NOT BE MISSED.

To celebrate the end of my first week at my new internship, I decided to watch Don’t F**k with Cats: Hunting and Internet Killer. It’s about a guy who posted videos of him killing young kittens in various ways, before moving on to humans, and a group of internet sleuths whose goal was to hunt him down. The first episode is traumatizing. It shows actual footage from his cat-killing videos (not the moment of death, but leading up to it). The kittens were so small and so scared and my cat was hugging my arm while he slept and that just made me cry harder. The rest of the documentary is incredibly cathartic, watching him be tracked down.

I watched the live action Aladdin (2019), originally to fall asleep to, but the second hand embarrassment was so strong and unending that I had to turn it off and finished it when I was fully conscious the next morning. I had seen it in theaters, but since I never reviewed it on Letterboxd, it gets to be included here.

To cheer myself up, I decided to catch up on The Masked Singer, not realizing they had made it to the season finale. And the winner?? (*SPOILER*) WAYNE BRADY. I love that dude! I mainly know him for Whose Line Is It Anyway but still! He’s crazy talented and now has a Golden Mask trophy, I guess!

Next thing I finished was The Movies That Made Us, a 4 part documentary series on Netflix about the making of cult classic movies. A while ago, I watched the episode on Die Hard (1988), and on Sunday I finished up the season with the episodes on Dirty Dancing (1987), Home Alone (1990), and Ghostbusters (1984).

Unofficial Ratings

Aladdin

Rating: 3 out of 5.

If you ever thought you had trouble talking to girls, just watch the jam scene. You’ll have so much self confidence afterward (if you don’t die of the cringe factor).

Sex, explained

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Janelle Monáe could recite the dictionary to me and I’d be content.

Don’t F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer

Rating: 4 out of 5.

It’s almost a feat of talent the amount of delusion and denial that guys mom had. She knew about the cat videos but “knew” he couldn’t have actually did it, even presented with so much freaking evidence. What an icon.

The Masked singer: Season 2

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I’m sure my neighbors hate when I watch this because I can’t stop myself from singing along with all the songs. I can’t help it that they choose such incredible tunes! Also, the fact that season 3 literally airs next month despite season two ending like a week ago… I’m pumped.

The Movies That Made Us

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Watching the episode on Home Alone not long after watching the actual movie was such a heartwarming and fun experience, and it gives me even greater respect for the movie (and explains why literally every single thing in that house is either red or green- they built the set from scratch!).

Check out my Letterboxd for even more rambling movie thoughts!
